After the crime, the perpetrator impersonated the victim online for three years, sending thousands of messages, threats, and emails via VPNs and anonymous services to mislead investigators. To prove the case, analysts processed massive datasets — hundreds of thousands of IP addresses, tens of thousands of messages, and gigabytes of digital traces. Kawa built a custom analysis system in Perl using simple tools like strings, grep, and databases to correlate VPN logins, accounts, and digital artifacts. The investigation ultimately showed that all harassment and threats were part of a single scheme: the killer was covering up the crime while framing others. Despite the absence of a body, digital forensics provided enough evidence to secure a life sentence.
